The Evolution and Origin of the Steel Pan

Justin PettyThis program will be presented by Justin Petty and will focus on the invention of the steel pan, which is the only acoustical instrument invented in the twentieth century. It will also focus on the social and economic factors that led up to this wonderful invention with an emphasis on the institution of slavery and carnival on the island of Trinidad. A solo performance on the steel drums will follow.

Mr. Petty holds a Bachelor Degree in Music Production and Engineering from Berklee College of Music and a Master of Science Degree in Broadcast Administration/Television Management from Boston University. Currently, he holds the record of being the youngest and first Tenured Professor of Broadcast Media Technology at Roxbury Community College in Roxbury, Massachusetts.

He has given lectures on the origin and evolution of the steelpan at Universities and Colleges throughout New England, Pennsylvania, the Virgin Islands and New York. He has written award winning music beds for many TV and radio commercials.
