Scots for Sale:
The Fate of the Scottish War Prisoners
in Seventeenth-Century New England
presented by Diane Rapaport
March 22, 7:00pm in Memorial Hall
In 1651 and 1652, two shiploads of
Scottish war prisoners arrived in
Boston, on the Unity and the John and
Sara. Sold for terms averaging five to
eight years, these captive Scots labored
at the Massachusetts ironworks, at
sawmills in Maine and New Hampshire, and
in towns and farms all over New England.
Their unwilling immigration is a
little-known chapter of colonial
history.
Diane has spent years tracing the
fate of the 17th century Scottish was
prisoners, and she will share stories of
these exiled Scotsmen with a special
focus on Essex County.
