Alice Hoffman

Alice Hoffman is the author of 21 novels, 3 books of short fiction, and 8 children's books. Her books have been major motion pictures, Oprah Picks, and New York Times bestsellers. In her 40 years of writing, Alice never found a reason to write nonfiction—until she couldn't find the book she needed when she was diagnosed with breast cancer.

This is not a breast cancer book. It is a guide for all of us, because we are all survivors – survivors of divorce, death, illness, life. An inspiring book comparable to Anna Quindlen's A Short Guide to a Happy Life, Survival Lessons is a crash course in perspective and how to take control of our world emotionally. As she says, "In many ways I wrote Survival Lessons to remind myself of the beauty of life, something that's all too easy to overlook during the crisis of illness or loss. I forgot that our lives are made up of equal parts of sorrow and joy, and that it is impossible to have one without the other. . . I wrote to remind myself that despite everything that was happening to me, there were still choices I could make."

Alice's advance from Survival Lessons will be donated to the Hoffman Breast Center at Mount Auburn Hospital in Cambridge.

Sponsored by the Friends of Memorial Hall Library and the Merrimack Valley Chapter of Hadassah.
