Standing Orders (Continuations)
Standing orders are placed on certain
materials that are seldom reviewed
and/or materials that are important
enough that receiving them automatically
and in a timely manner is better than
missing them. Standing orders are
usually placed for audiobooks, travel series, some
Reference titles, hardbound magazines,
and occasionally for publisher's series.
Titles on the Standing Order list are
evaluated on a continuing basis.
Standing Orders are kept to a minimum,
because of shipping and handling charges
from some suppliers. However, Baker and
Taylor does not charge us for shipping,
so we try to get out print SO titles
from them.
Audiobooks
The majority of our audiobook titles now
come from a standing order with Audio
Editions, which offers titles from many
different companies. We also have
a small plan with Recorded Books to get
Brilliance titles through them monthly
at a heavily discounted price.
We have standing order plans from
Recorded Books for books on CD. The quality of their titles
is uniformly excellent, we receive
discounts, free shipping, and free
replacements for a year. Their support
and service are excellent. Also, we
currently have a very flexible standing
order plan from BBC Audio.
Travel Guides
Our current standing order vendor for
travel guides is Baker and Taylor.
Currently, we have a selection of Fodor,
Frommer, and Baedeker guides on standing
order. We receive a 25% discount.
Reference Books
We currently get some reference titles
as standing orders directly from the
publishers. We generally have to pay
hefty shipping and handling charges.
Hardbound Magazines
Our current standing order vendor for
hardbound magazines is Regent. We
currently receive titles from McCall's
Needlework, House Beautiful, Stereo
Review Buyer's Guide, and Woman's Day
Best Ideas for Christmas.
Publisher's Series
We currently have none on standing order
because of high shipping costs, and low or
nonexistent discounts. For example, most
Time-Life books are available from our
jobbers at discounts ranging from
25-40%, so we order them individually.
