Temple Emanuel was founded in Lawrence, Massachusetts in 1920 at the corner of Lowell and Milton Streets. [1] [2] A new temple was built in Lawrence's Tower Hill neighborhood in 1955. [3] In January of 1979, the Lawrence congregation was granted a construction permit for a new property on Haggett's Pond Road in Andover. In November 1979, the congregation's Torah was hand carried by relay runners to a new house of worship in Andover. [4] The new temple opened Friday November 22, 1979 and was formally dedicated on May 16, 1990. [5] [6] In 1980, The Nursery School at Temple Emanuel opened for children ages 2 years 9 months to 4 years 11 months. [7] In 1990, The Nursery School at Temple Emanual began offering a kindergarten. [8] In 1998, Temple Emanual dedicated a new chapel and education wing. [9] In 1999, Rabbi Karen Landy became the first woman rabbi on staff.[10] In 2020, Temple Emanuel celebrated its centennial with a Zoom celebration during the Covid-19 pandemic. [11] In 2022, Rachel Reef-Simpson became Temple Emanuel's first female cantor. [12] In October 2023, the congregation received $150,000 in federal funding for security expenses incurred in response to increased hate crimes and terror attacks on faith based communities. [13]

Rabbi Robert Goldstein of Temple Emanuel was awarded the Chamber of Commerce Service Award in 2004. He retired in June of 2021 after 31 years of service to Temple Emanuel. Jessica Spitalnic Mates, former Rabbi of Temple Beth El of Boca Raton for 22 years, served as Interim Rabbi. In February 2024, it was announced that Rabbi David Wilfond would assume the position of senior rabbi in July 2024. [14]
