Butler Bank, founded in 1901 by General Gardner Pearson (1882 - 1953), bought the 1/2 acre piece of property at 16 Main Street, Andover in March of 2006The space had been occupied by Friendly's Restaurant from June 1, 1965 until December 24. The property was sold to Butler Bank for $1.45 million.   
*According to tradition, the land comprising both the North and South Parishes of Andover was purchased from Cutshamachie, the Sagamore of Massachusetts, for six English pounds and a coat.  This event is commemorated in the town seal, which was officially adoped at the annual meeting on March 5, 1900It is generally believed that the new seal was designed by Leonard Sherman, a local artist, photographer and nature writer.  However, there were no Native Americans in New England tribes that ever wore such an elaborate headdress.
*The original town seal included just text: the town name, state, and date of incorporation. 
*In 1895, John E. Whiting, a local jewler, designed a porcelin pin depicting the sale of the land that was to become Andover from the Indians as a souvenir for the Town's 250th anniversary.

* For the Town's 350th anniversary, the Town requisitioned a painting of the seal for the selectman's meeting room.  Kristoffel Meulen, then a high school senior, was chosen.   


Friendly's was torn down on September 6, 2006. Construction for Butler Bank began in October, 2006. This, Butler Bank's fourth branch, opened on May 24, 2007. CPA John J. Drago and  Doherty Law Offices were tenants of the bank at the opening. Boston King Cafe opened in the Butler Bank building on April 26, 2008.

On April 17, 2010, People’s United Bank, acquired Butler Bank after it was closed by the Massachusetts Division of Banks on April 16.

In 2012 People's United acquired Danversbank and Riverbank and consolidated all bank locations at 16 North Main Street.

  • According to tradition, the land comprising both the North and South Parishes of Andover was purchased from Cutshamachie, the Sagamore of Massachusetts, for six English pounds and a coat. This event is commemorated in the town seal, which was officially adoped at the annual meeting on March 5, 1900. It is generally believed that the new seal was designed by Leonard Sherman, a local artist, photographer and nature writer. However, there were no Native Americans in New England tribes that ever wore such an elaborate headdress.
