Kristin Kearnis was killed in a bicycle accident in 2008 at the age of 26. When cleaning her apartment her brother Billy found her outline for a children's story titled Surf's Up Penny in her apartment. He had 5 copies (illustrated by Frits Ahlefeldt-Laurvig) printed. Penny's mother Pam Sheehey had the book published on a larger scale.
