Stop & Shop opened its Andover store in Shawsheen Plaza on June 24, 2011, a year after the [[Andover Business - Market Basket| Market Basket]] at that location closed.  
Allen Hinton was the first person in New England to exclusively sell ice cream. Hinton, an ex-slave and waiter at the Theological Seminary, began selling ice cream in 1877. The stand was located on Hidden Road and was operated until 1930 by Hinton's heirs.
