Smith & Nephew is a medical device company based in London, England, with U.S. headquarters in Andover, MA. In 2004, the company chose to close their medical device manufacturing plant located on Dascomb Road in Andover due to economic cut backs. However, the headquarters that specializes in endoscopy units, also in Andover, continued operations.
The Andover Companies consisting of the Merrimack Mutual Fire Insurance Company (founded in 1828), The Cambridge Mutual Fire Insurance Company (founded in 1833), and the Bay State Insurance Company (incorporated in 1955), uses independent agents that operate on a mutual plan where savings resulting from efficient operations is used to decrease costs to member businessess and property owners.
