David Whitney received the Newburyport Area Industrial Development Award for a photo called ''Carnival'' that he shot at Clowntown. His winning image was called "compositionally strong and colorfully vibrant, a striking image that takes viewers along for an exciting ride," by the judge. His photographs are often images of nature,showing a familiar object or scene from a new perspective in order to make an image that evokes the essence of a place.
