The "Phillips School" as it was first called, was open April 30, 1778 by Samuel Phillips. The present campus was built in 1865In 1807 the "Class in Theology" became a separate institution, the [[Andover Theological Seminary]].  
The Andover Townsman started publication on October 14, 1887 and was located on 37 Main Street. It's founder, John N. Cole believed that Andover should have a newspaper of its own. The Townsman was actually Andover's 3rd weekly paperThe Journal of Humanity and Herald of the American Temperance Society ran from 1829-1833.  The Andover Advertiser ran from 1853 to 1866.


In the 1940's Phillips Academy embarked on a mission to democratize education by offering scholarships to boys who would not otherwise be able to afford private school.  
The Centennial Issue of the Andover Townsman was published July 21, 1988.  The special issue is a retrospective of town history.
The Townsman started in 1887 when a corporation of businessmen, including John N. Cole, purchased the Andover Press which previously published the Andover Advertiser. Irving Rogers purchased the Press in 1949. The Andover Press ceased operation in 1960 however, the Townsman continued publication.
