"George Washington at Monmouth" commemorates" the Battle of Monmouth. As the British left Monmouth Court House in Monmouth, New Jersey on June 28, 1778, George Washington attacked a British Army column commanded by Lieutenant General Sir Henry Clinton.
This painting was restored in 1979 with funds donated from the Andover Bicentennial Commission, the Board of Trustees on Memorial Hall Library, and Friends of Memorial Hall Library. In 1978 Theodore E. Stebbins, Jr., Curator of American Painting of the Museum of Fine Arts placed the date of the painting as the late 1800's to early 1900's.
