On this day in 1886, the Statue of Liberty was dedicated to the people of America. After sailing to America on board the French frigate “Isere,” Lady Liberty was reassembled on her pedestal in four months time. Remember, she arrived here in 350 individual pieces that were packed into 214 crates! Her dedication took place in front of thousands of spectators. Surely it was a sight to behold. Lady Liberty is still a sight to behold today! Imagine what it must have been like for those traveling so far to see her standing there in the harbor…their new home. I get goosebumps every time I think about it. We have a book here in the Children’s Room (one of my all-time favorites) called Naming Liberty by Jane Yolen. It is told in parallel stories. One is the story of a family immigrating to the United States, and the other is the story of the building of the statue. It is a wonderful read. Oh, just in case you’re still trying to come up with an idea for a costume for the weekend, click here and you’ll find directions on how to make a Statue of Liberty crown and torch. You’re sure to light up the night, just as Lady Liberty lights up New York Harbor!
