Communications scholar, Amy Smith, will lead a discussion about the impact that family history research has on familycommunication, family hierarchy, shared family identity and gender roles over time. Smith will share her research findings about the motivations for conducting family history research and describe how women's roles in families and genealogical organizations assign value to their genealogical findings. A structured, small-group activity considering the rich rituals of narrative inheiritance and how genealogy work changes family communication will follow the talk.
