Amateur Genealogists

It's hard to keep up with the growing number of digitized genealogical records available online and just as hard to keep up with technological advances.  How do you make the most of the limited amount of time you have to spend climbing your family tree?  Our suggestion is to follow your favorite blogger, or visit your favorite professional genealogist's website, or your favorite company's website once a month.  See what they're talking about, watch a short video, follow some links and then proceed to your personal research.  Here are a couple suggestions if you don't have any idea where to start.

Ancestry.com Videos - Everyone has heard of Ancestry.com.  MHL has a subscription that you are welcome to use.  However, the information on Ancestry (and in every genealogical database) is growing at a tremendous rate.  Searching techniques and page design evolves.  Ancestry.com has a "Desktop Education Series" which is free to view from any computer with internet access in the world.  This includes a free "What's New at Ancestry" monthly video.  Watching these videos is a great way to learn about the latest developments in research.

Family Tree Magazine Blog - Family Tree Magazine is filled with articles on conducting genealogical research, success stories, genealogical software, conference information and so forth.  MHL has a subscription to the magazine so check it out!  Fortunately, Family Tree Magazine also has a free blog.  The blog includes posts on a variety of topics written by a variety of genealogical professionals.  Read it and learn.  Every entry has at least one fantastic nugget of information.
