New Year, New You?

A new year often means a new take on health and wellness for many people. Whether this means joining a gym, starting a yoga class, taking up rock climbing, trying new eating habits, or getting more sleep, we’ve got you covered on health resources. Here’s a sampling of some books to help you on your path:

Yoga

Breathe : the simple, revolutionary 14-day program to improve your mental and physical health / Dr. Belisa Vranich

Most of us stopped breathing in the anatomically "right" way when we were four or five years old. We now mostly breathe in a way that is anatomically incongruous and makes for more illness. Dr. Vranich shows readers how to turn back the tide of stress and illness, and improve the overall quality of their life through a daily breathing workout.

Yoga: the path to holistic health / B.K.S. Iyengar

A clear, illustrated guide to the basics (and beyond) of yoga practice, as relayed by one of the foremost teachers and practitioners of yoga in the West. Finally learn difference between bakasana and kakasana poses!

Fitness

Strong: nine workout programs for women to burn fat, boost metabolism, and build strength for life / Lou Schuler and Alwyn Cosgrove

Schuler and Cosgrove, the authors of the popular New Rules of Lifting series, present a series of strength training exercises to help the beginner-to-intermediate exerciser. Designed for women (and men!) looking to get stronger and leaner, this book is a great introduction to using weight-training for long-term health.

Your body is your barbell: No gym. Just gravity. Build a leaner, stronger, more muscular you in 28 days! / B.J. Gaddour, CSCS

Gaddour shows the exercise novice techniques to build strength, burn fat, and gain muscle with little-to-no equipment. You don’t even need a gym membership to get fit!

Meditation

Wherever you go, there you are: Mindfulness meditation in everyday life / Jon Kabat-Zinn

Kabat-Zinn’s classic work that bridged the gap between eastern practice and western medicine. He shows the reader how to use simple mindfulness techniques to reduce stress and raise awareness in everyday situations.

Waking up: A guide to spirituality without religion/ Sam Harris

Neuroscientist and best-selling author Harris explores the history of meditation and mindfulness techniques, while placing them in a non-religious context. Along the way he writes of his own experiences with these techniques, as well as the ways in which the reader can use them in their own lives.
