Kindness meditation flags at the library

planting the kindness meditation flags

Have you seen all those flags planted in front of the library? They're part of The Loving Kindness Project at Wood Hill Middle School. Next time you're in, have a look! They'll be here for the next week.

A statement from the Wood Hill Middle School:

The Loving Kindness Project at Wood Hill Middle School

We have been introducing mindfulness practices here at Wood Hill for the past two years. This year one of our focuses has been on loving kindness meditation, also called kindhearted mindfulness.

For the past several months, during our monthly assembly, students were asked to focus first on themselves, then on a loved one, then on someone they know only in a superficial way, and finally on the larger world.

We asked the students to silently and sincerely wish each of these groups kindhearted phrases such as "May you be well, May you be happy, May you be loved," etc.

After our last school assembly, we asked the students to write down phrases that were meaningful to them and that they wanted to wish to the larger world.

We then went as a school community outside to a grassy area in front of our school and planted nearly 1000 flags, which expressed our kindhearted wishes for the larger world.

Here, in front of Memorial Hall Library, is an example of our wishes for a kinder, safer, happier, and more loving world.
